Project: BF 13462 – Twp 542 Pointe Aux Pins Creek Culvert Replacement – City of Fort Saskatchewan
Owner: The City of Fort Saskatchewan
Completed: 2024
Project Details: ABMK Engineering led the successful replacement of Bridge File 13462 on Township Road 542 over Pointe aux Pins Creek in the City of Fort Saskatchewan. The original 3.0 m diameter SPCSP culvert had deteriorated and lacked adequate hydraulic capacity. A previous design proposed a 6.0 m span × 3.1 rise m arch culvert on deep piles, which would have significantly increased costs and complexity. Upon review, ABMK developed an alternative design solution that balanced hydraulic performance, structural adequacy, environmental compliance, and cost-effectiveness.
The final design featured a 4.3 m diameter SPCSP culvert with a 35 m invert length, embedded to allow for fish passage and natural sediment continuity, while avoiding the need for piling. This solution met Alberta Transportation’s design guidelines and effectively addressed site-specific constraints, including channel alignment, cover limitations, and environmental sensitivities.
